Who is Eligible for Advocacy?

Explorability’s advocacy service is available to people who self-identify as having a disability as defined in the Disability Services Act (1993). That is, a person self-identifies as having a disability that:

1)    is attributable to an intellectual, psychiatric, cognitive, neurological, sensory or physical impairment, or a combination of such impairments;

2)    is permanent or likely to be permanent;

3)    results in:

              a)    a substantially reduced capacity of the person for                                             communication, social interaction, learning or mobility; and

              b)    the need for continuing support services.

Explorability can also support families, carers, guardians and significant others of people who self-identify as having a disability as outlined above.

Eligibility is limited to people with disability who are permanent residents of Western Australia and whose disability manifested prior to 65 years of age.

Limits of our Advocacy Service

Explorability is not a crisis service. Our advocates cannot provide crisis housing services (including looking for rental properties) or crisis mental health services.

For the appropriate services, please see the list below:

Emergency Services:

  • Police, Fire, Ambulance: 000

Mental health:

  • Lifeline: 13 11 14

  • Mental Health Emergency Response Line (Metro): 1300 555 788

  • Mental Health Emergency Response Line (Peel) 1800 676 822

Explorability's advocacy services are not an ongoing service, instead our advocates provide goals-based advocacy. This means that we cannot provide ongoing support to manage or coordinate services for you (case work) and once your goals are achieved, we discuss exiting you from our service

Explorability advocates cannot make decisions for you. Rather, they can support you to understand options that are available so that you can make an informed decision.

Explorability advocates are not able to investigate matters or practices of other organisations, but can support you with following a complaints or feedback process.

Our advocates do not provide legal advice or representation. For support around legal matters, we encourage you to contact your local community legal centre. Find your nearest centre here: (external site)

If Explorability is not the right service to support you, we will explain the reasons why and endeavour to refer you to a more appropriate service

How can I Access Advocacy?

Individuals with disability, their family and carers or service providers can refer directly to Explorability for advocacy services. Before referring an individual to Explorability, consent from that individual or their guardian must be obtained.

Explorability's referral forms are available online here or a PDF version is available to download on this page. An individual with disability requesting advocacy support can complete a referral over the phone with a member of Explorability's intake team.

Your referral will be discussed with the team to decide if we are the most appropriate service for you. Due to high demand for our advocacy service, a waitlist is in place which is organised by urgency.
